Things to Do in Boulder Beyond the Festival
Boulder offers winter hiking at Chautauqua, skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort about 30 minutes away, the Boulder Creek Path, and a walkable downtown with a planetarium, a historic teahouse, and Pearl Street shopping. Most fit into a break between screenings; skiing is a half-day trip.
Outdoors, within walking or short-drive distance
Boulder in January is a working ski-and-hike town first, festival host second. If you have a few free hours between screenings, these are the closest options.
| Activity | Distance from downtown | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chautauqua Park winter hiking | ~2 miles | Confirmed | Trailheads (Chautauqua, Royal Arch, Bluebell) are open year-round; trails can be icy or snow-packed in January, so traction devices help. |
| Boulder Creek Path | Downtown, runs through the core of the city | Confirmed | Paved, flat, cleared in winter; a walkable break from festival crowds. |
| Eldora Mountain Resort (skiing/snowboarding) | ~21 miles, about 30–40 minutes by car | Confirmed | Boulder’s nearest ski area; no shuttle confirmed from festival venues, so you would need your own car or a rideshare. |
| Nordic/snowshoe rental shops (downtown Boulder outfitters) | Downtown | Confirmed | Several outdoor retailers near Pearl Street rent snowshoes and Nordic ski gear by the day. |
Indoors and cultural, for a change of pace
- Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse: a Tajik-built teahouse and restaurant on Pearl Street, open for lunch and dinner; a quieter sit-down option away from festival-venue lines.
- Fiske Planetarium (CU Boulder campus): public shows run on a regular schedule; check their site directly for the January calendar, since university breaks can affect show times.
- Boulder Public Library, Main Branch: this is also one of our confirmed 2027 festival venues, so you may already be walking past it between screenings; outside of festival programming it’s a normal public library on the Boulder Creek Path.
- Pearl Street Mall: the pedestrian shopping and dining strip at the center of downtown, and the rough spine connecting several festival venues; street performers and shops operate normally during the festival.
Nightlife beyond the festival parties
Sundance’s official parties are typically invite- or badge-tiered; these are regular Boulder venues open to the public every night, useful if you want a low-key evening.
- License No. 1 (inside the St Julien Hotel): downtown cocktail bar.
- The Corner Bar (inside the Hotel Boulderado): historic hotel bar on Pearl Street.
- West End Tavern: barbecue and whiskey bar with a rooftop deck, west end of Pearl Street.
- Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery and Southern Sun Pub & Brewery: local brewpub chain with two Boulder locations.
- Bohemian Biergarten: Eastern European beer hall near CU Boulder.
None of these venues are affiliated with Sundance Institute. Hours can shift in winter; call ahead if you’re planning a specific night.
Planning around screenings
Most of these fit into a 2–3 hour gap between screenings if you’re staying near downtown or The Hill. Eldora is the exception. Treat it as a dedicated half-day if you want to ski, not a between-films activity.
