Dates and what’s confirmed so far

Sundance Institute announced the move to Boulder with festival dates of January 21–31, 2027. Within that window, the official press portal currently lists a premiere period of January 21–26, awards on January 29, and a limited public online program from January 28–31. A dedicated timeline page with a printable version is next on our build list, for now, this section is the authoritative summary on our site.

Venues: what’s actually confirmed

The official February announcement listed 11 screening-theater listings and 4 talks/programming listings. Several of those listings share an organization or a physical address, so treat any claim of “15 separate venues” with skepticism, we don’t make that claim, and neither should you when comparing sources. Hotel Boulderado is identified as festival headquarters. CU Boulder has confirmed sound, projection, and accessibility upgrades at Macky Auditorium, Roe Green Theatre, and Muenzinger Hall ahead of the festival. A standalone venue hub with a distance matrix and per-venue arrival guides (Boulder Theater, Macky, Chautauqua, the Dairy Arts Center venues, and the CU Boulder cluster) is in production.

Where to stay

The short version: downtown Boulder (Pearl Street area) puts you closest to Boulder Theater and Hotel Boulderado but at a premium; the CU Boulder area suits anyone prioritizing Macky, Roe Green, or Muenzinger; and commuter towns, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Broomfield, even Denver, trade a lower nightly rate for a longer, weather-dependent commute in January. Our full hotel hub, with a walk-time matrix and a stay-area matcher tool, is the next major piece we’re building.

Tickets and passes

Pending Ticket details are expected in September 2026. Preliminary indications point to pass and package sales opening in October, with single-film tickets following in early January, but prices and final rules aren’t official yet, and we won’t publish numbers we can’t source. Once pricing goes live, we’ll build a full comparison of pass types against typical viewing patterns.

Getting to and around Boulder

RTD’s AB1 route is the official public transit connection currently cited by Visit Boulder and Denver International Airport for reaching Boulder. Within Boulder, Visit Boulder has described a free HOP transit service, e-bike passes, park-and-ride facilities, and dedicated festival shuttles, all of it currently Planned, meaning the intent is public but hours, stops, and eligibility haven’t been released. We’ll upgrade each of these to Confirmed the moment official schedules land.

Parking

Pending Festival-specific parking plans are still in development. Until Sundance or the City of Boulder publish festival rules, the City’s standard parking rules are the only reliable baseline, we link directly to the city page rather than guessing at what a festival overlay might look like.

January weather and packing

Boulder in late January sits at roughly 5,300 feet, and conditions swing more than flatland winter weather does, sunny and dry one day, icy sidewalks the next. A full historical-vs-forecast breakdown and packing list is on our build list for Launch Gate A.

New to Sundance?

If this is your first festival, the sequencing that matters is: confirm your dates, pick a stay area based on which venues you care about, then plan transport around that stay area, not the other way around. Our dedicated First-Timer’s Guide walks through this step by step; it’s next in our publishing queue.
