Sundance 2027 Itineraries: One-Day, Three-Day, and Five-Day Plans
A one-day trip should focus on a single venue zone with 2–3 screenings and built-in meal breaks; a three-day trip can mix downtown and Hill venues with one rest morning; a five-day trip has room for a Chautauqua day, a shopping/rest day, and screenings across every venue zone. None of these plans assume a specific film lineup, since that isn’t public until December 2026. They’re built around venue geography and pacing, which you can lock in now.
These itineraries are structural, not a schedule of specific films, because the lineup and screening times won’t be public until closer to the festival. Pair this page with our venues guide for exact locations, our food and coffee guide for meal stops between screenings, and our tickets guide once you know which ticket type you’re using.
One-day itinerary: single-zone focus
Pick one venue zone and stay there
With one day, don’t try to cover both downtown and the Hill; the walk and wait time between zones eats into screening time. Pick the zone with your priority film or films, plan 2–3 screenings with at least an hour of buffer between each for lines and seating, and build a meal or coffee stop into a gap rather than rushing between back-to-back screenings. Check our venues guide to confirm which films are showing in your chosen zone once the schedule is public.
Three-day itinerary: two zones, one rest morning
Day 1: Downtown and Pearl Street
Arrive, get settled, and start with downtown venues within walking distance of Pearl Street. Use the evening for a sit-down meal from our food and drink guide.
Day 2: The Hill
Shift to Hill-area venues for the day. Use our coffee shop list for a pre-screening stop.
Day 3: Flex day
Use your last day for whichever zone has your remaining priority screenings, or build in a lighter morning if the first two days ran long. Check out logistics before your last screening if you’re not staying an extra night.
Five-day itinerary: full festival footprint
Day 1: Arrival and downtown
Arrive, settle in, and ease into downtown venues near Pearl Street.
Day 2: The Hill
A full day around Hill-area venues, using nearby coffee and quick-meal spots between screenings.
Day 3: Chautauqua and a change of pace
Chautauqua’s venue and surrounding park make a good midpoint break from the downtown/Hill circuit. If the weather cooperates, this is also a reasonable day for a short walk between screenings: check our what to wear guide for realistic January conditions first.
Day 4: East Boulder or 29th Street
Cover the East Boulder venue zone, and use the evening for a less rushed dinner if your confirmed screening schedule leaves time.
Day 5: Catch-up day
Use your last full day for any screenings you missed, a rewatch, or simply recovery time before travel. This is also a good day to catch part of the January 28–31 online window if you’re staying through it, per our watch online guide.
Pacing rules that apply to any itinerary length
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Calculate travel and required arrival time between screenings | Boulder’s venues aren’t all walkable from each other; factor in line and seating time too. |
| Start by planning two screenings, then assess a third | Between lines, walking, and meals, a 4th screening usually means rushing or skipping food. |
| Build in one lighter morning if staying 3+ days | Festival pacing is tiring; a slow coffee morning prevents burnout by day 3 or 4. |
| Check weather before finalizing zone order | A storm day is a good day to stay in one compact zone rather than crossing town. |
Things to do in Boulder between Sundance screenings
Choose an outing by the time you can spare after allowing for your next venue’s arrival rules. These are independent trip ideas, not official festival events or guaranteed January 2027 departures.
| Available time | Option to explore | Before you go |
|---|---|---|
| A short downtown gap | Pearl Street shops, bookstores and a meal or coffee stop | Keep the route close to your next screening. Check business hours rather than assuming late festival opening. |
| A longer indoor break | Museum of Boulder | Check the current exhibition, admission, opening hours and access arrangements. Allow time to return to your venue. |
| A free half-day | A guided local history, food or outdoor experience | Confirm the actual January date, meeting point and finish location. A listing for Boulder may depart from another city. |
| A full day without films | A regional excursion | Keep it separate from a must-see screening. Check winter operation, travel conditions and the operator’s cancellation terms. |
Visit Boulder’s Pearl Street guide describes downtown shops and the nearby Museum of Boulder. Its winter activities guide is a starting point for seasonal ideas. Confirm details directly with the attraction or operator before booking.
How to compare a tour or activity
- Use the correct date and number of guests, then compare the total including fees, transport, equipment and any admission paid separately.
- Check pickup location: “from Denver” is different from pickup at your Boulder hotel.
- Read minimum age, mobility and equipment requirements for your group. Ask the operator about anything the listing does not explain.
- Check the cancellation deadline and what happens if the operator cancels for weather or minimum group size.
- Leave a buffer after the stated return time. Avoid a nonrefundable screening immediately after a trip outside Boulder.
Build your own screening-day plan
Write down each confirmed film’s start, expected finish, venue, required arrival time and route from the previous stop. Add meals, hotel checkout and your final ride home. If two commitments overlap after those additions, choose a different showing before purchasing.
For a late arrival, make the first evening a hotel and meal night. For a departure day, arrange luggage storage directly with your lodging and work backward from your airport transfer. On a bad-weather day, shorten outdoor gaps and use an indoor break near the next venue.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the full film lineup before planning my itinerary?
Not yet. Sundance Institute’s official lineup announcement is expected in December 2026. These itineraries are built around venue zones and pacing so you can plan logistics now and slot in specific films once the lineup and schedule are public.
How many films can I realistically see in one day?
Most visitors comfortably manage 2–3 screenings a day when staying within one venue zone, fewer if crossing between zones or dealing with winter weather.
Should I plan around the online screening window instead?
If you can’t be in Boulder for the full festival, the January 28–31, 2027 public online window is a real alternative for catching films remotely. See our watch online guide for what’s confirmed.
