Sundance Institute needs roughly 2,000 volunteers for the 2027 Boulder festival. Applications are open now directly through Sundance’s own site. You choose a commitment level (Full Festival, Half Festival, Sign Up, or Student) and in return get screening vouchers, meals, festival gear, and access to a community of fellow volunteers. You’re responsible for your own lodging unless you qualify for limited Institute-provided housing or the volunteer housing option in Longmont.

Eligibility

Who can volunteer at Sundance 2027? Most roles require a minimum age of 21; some Sign Up and Student tracks accept applicants 18 and older, with active student status verified for the Student track. You do not need to live in Colorado to apply, but you do need a plan for lodging before you apply. Sundance Institute asks applicants to have secured housing, or to plan around the limited housing options described below. Priority in a competitive applicant pool goes to previous volunteers in good standing, especially those who already have lodging arranged; Boulder is a new host city, so expect real competition from returning volunteers with a track record from Sundance’s decades in Park City.

How to apply

Applications and all onboarding happen directly through Sundance Institute. This site does not process applications and never will. The application itself asks for background, relevant experience, a photo, and role preferences. After applying, Volunteer Resources Coordinators begin reaching out from September into October to confirm placements; accepted volunteers then receive an onboarding email with agreements and specific position details ahead of training.

Sundance Institute is also hosting optional volunteer information sessions over Zoom on September 2, 9, and 16, 2026, from 5:30–6:30 PM MT, for anyone who wants a walkthrough before applying. Each session covers the same material, so you only need to attend one. Use the Zoom link on Sundance’s official volunteer page. The current page provides direct access; join early because webinar capacity is limited.

Apply only through Sundance Institute’s own site while applications are open. We link directly below and do not collect any application information ourselves.

Commitment levels and shifts

TrackCommitmentSchedule
Full Festival9–11+ shiftsPredetermined schedule across January 20 – February 1, 2027
Half FestivalTypically 6–8 consecutive shiftsPredetermined schedule during an assigned window, usually the first week
Sign UpMinimum 4 shifts or 24 hours, whichever comes firstYou choose your own shifts; schedules released in December
StudentMinimum 3 shifts or 18 hours, whichever comes firstSame flexible scheduling as Sign Up, with active student status required

Sign Up and Student volunteers get to pick their own shifts once schedules are released in December 2026, which is the most flexible option if you don’t want to commit to a fixed block of the festival. Full Festival and Half Festival volunteers are assigned a schedule built around specific venues or departments.

Role types

Use the position catalog linked from Sundance’s official volunteer page to compare current roles and their requirements. Match your experience, availability and transport plan to the listed position. Submitting a preference does not guarantee placement.

Benefits and perks

  • Screening access: vouchers earned per hours volunteered (historically about one per four hours), redeemable for tickets via the volunteer/staff line or waitlist, plus volunteer-exclusive screenings. Full Festival assigned-schedule volunteers have historically received unlimited screening access.
  • Meals: Grub Stub-style meal vouchers usable at participating restaurants; quantity depends on your commitment level.
  • Gear: an official festival gear pack, historically including a volunteer jacket and other apparel.
  • Community: a volunteer appreciation party and access to the volunteer community built around the festival.

Exact 2027 perk quantities are not itemized publicly beyond this; treat the above as based on Sundance’s own volunteer page and historical pattern, not an official 2027 benefits schedule.

Housing for volunteers

Where do Sundance volunteers stay? You’re expected to arrange your own lodging in most cases. Local volunteers from Boulder, Denver, and the surrounding Colorado communities are not eligible for Institute-provided housing. If you don’t have lodging arranged, Sundance Institute maintains a lodging search tool, and a limited “Volunteer Village” housing option in Longmont is available for volunteers without their own arrangements: Colorado Sun reports several hundred volunteers could face a waiting list for that option, so apply and sort out housing early rather than assuming a spot will be available. Institute-provided housing beyond the Volunteer Village is limited to select Full Festival and specialized Half Festival volunteers with assigned schedules. See our where-to-stay guide if you’re booking your own room, and our cost to attend guide for budgeting lodging alongside the rest of your trip.

Transport for volunteers

Boulder’s festival footprint is compact (roughly two miles across downtown and the CU Boulder campus), which generally means less reliance on a car between shifts than Sundance’s old Park City venue layout required. If you’re staying in the Volunteer Village in Longmont, budget time and a transport plan for the commute into Boulder for each shift; see our getting around guide for current transit options between Boulder-area towns and the venue cluster.

Costs to budget as a volunteer

Volunteering is unpaid. You should budget for your own lodging (unless placed in Institute housing or the Volunteer Village), transport to and around Boulder, and any meals beyond what your Grub Stub vouchers cover. See our cost to attend guide for budget/mid-range/premium lodging and daily cost ranges you can apply to a volunteer trip.

Before you apply: check that the commitment fits

  • List the dates and hours you can reliably work, including any required training and check-in.
  • Compare the current position catalog with your experience and access needs; ask Volunteer Resources about role-specific requirements.
  • Budget lodging and transport, including early or late shifts. A housing application is not a confirmed room.
  • Keep copies of your application and placement instructions. Wait for your assigned role and schedule before treating either as confirmed.

Does volunteering guarantee a festival pass or a seat at every film?

No. Screening benefits depend on your commitment and the current volunteer rules, and admission is subject to the applicable availability and access conditions. Volunteer work takes priority over your personal film schedule; do not budget on an unrestricted free-pass equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

When do Sundance 2027 volunteer applications open?

August 31, 2026, directly through Sundance Institute’s own site. There’s no fixed closing date, but applications typically wind down in December as placements fill.

How do I submit a Sundance 2027 volunteer application?

You apply directly through Sundance Institute’s own site, not through this guide. The application asks for background, relevant experience, a photo, and role preferences. Volunteer Resources Coordinators reach out from September into October to confirm placements, and accepted volunteers get an onboarding email with agreements and position details ahead of training.

How many volunteers does Sundance 2027 need?

Approximately 2,000, according to Sundance Institute, spread across more than three dozen specialized role types with venue and theater support making up the largest share.

Do Sundance volunteers get paid?

No. Volunteering is unpaid. Benefits instead include screening vouchers, meal vouchers, festival gear, and community events. Local volunteers and most non-local volunteers are expected to cover their own lodging and transport.

Can I volunteer without arranging my own lodging?

Only in limited cases. A Volunteer Village housing option exists in Longmont for volunteers without their own lodging, but Colorado Sun reports it may have a waiting list for several hundred applicants. Most Institute-provided housing is reserved for select Full Festival and specialized Half Festival volunteers with assigned schedules.
