Why Airbnb is doing this now
Boulder doesn’t have enough hotel rooms to house every Sundance 2027 attendee in the city, and reporting through the summer of 2026 has repeatedly flagged lodging as a pressure point for the festival’s first Boulder year. Alex Folson, Airbnb’s policy representative for Colorado, said the company is “committed to supporting the region in increasing accommodations for big events like Sundance,” adding that more lodging options “helps keep prices down while allowing more locals to benefit from hosting for this major event.” The $200 bonus is a direct incentive to convert Boulder homeowners who haven’t hosted before into new listings before the festival.
What this means if you’re planning to stay in Boulder
If you checked short-term rental sites earlier in 2026 and found little available, it’s worth checking again periodically between now and the end of the year. The bonus runs through December 31, 2026, so new listings could keep appearing as that deadline approaches. That said, this doesn’t loosen Boulder’s rules: hosts still need a city-issued Short-Term Rental License, and most license types require the host to live on-site. A new listing without a visible license number is a red flag, not a bargain.
For hotel options and how to compare them against rentals, see our Sundance 2027 hotels guide. For how lodging costs fit into a full trip budget, see our cost to attend guide. Sundance’s own lodging platform already lists properties well outside Boulder proper; our breakdown of that listing spread covers what that means for pricing.
What we’re watching
Whether the $200 incentive meaningfully grows Boulder’s rental supply, whether Airbnb extends or expands the offer as January 2027 approaches, and whether early nightly rates soften as more listings come online. We’ll update this page with Confirmed changes as they’re reported.
