Sundance 2027 Expands Its Lineup for the Boulder Debut
Sundance Institute has confirmed the 2027 festival will screen more films than recent Park City editions: its four main competition categories grow to 12 films each, several other sections expand too, and the festival adds a first-time FIPRESCI critics’ jury and Academy Award qualification for one of its top prizes. None of this changes dates, venues, or the ticket timeline already covered elsewhere on this site.

Why this matters for your trip
More films across more sections means more screening options during the ten days, which is good news if you’re building a flexible itinerary rather than chasing one specific title. The return of Family Matinee is worth flagging if you’re weighing whether to bring kids: it’s the one section explicitly aimed at younger audiences, though the bulk of Sundance’s program still skews adult. None of this changes where the festival happens; all confirmed venues are still within about two miles of each other, and our venues guide has the full list.
What this doesn’t cover
This expansion doesn’t change the ticket timeline: passes and packages are still expected in October 2026, with single tickets following in early January 2027 once the December lineup announcement lands. See our ticket sale calendar for the full schedule and our pass vs. package guide for how to decide what to buy once sales open.
